Shahid Bashir

   Mr. Shahid Bashir is the newly appointed Pakistan’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization. Ambassador Bashir brings with him over 35 years of experience on trade negotiations, trade and tariff policy formulation, adjudication of tax and trade law cases and formulation/implementation of international trade and tariff policies for Pakistan. He held various positions in public sector in the areas of fiscal and trade policies.

    As chief negotiator of Pakistan he successfully concluded several FTAs such as South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA), Pak-China FTA (Goods, Services and Investment), Pak-Malaysia Comprehensive Partnership Agreement, Pak-Sri Lanka FTA and was chief negotiator for ongoing RTAs including Pak-GCC, Pak-Singapore, Pak-Jordan and Pak-Mauritius FTAs. He was also chief negotiator for Afghan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement. Besides, he contributed in bilateral talks with the US under the auspices of Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) including the US initiative of Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZ) for Pakistan and Afghanistan.

    Ambassador Bashir holds degrees of Master in English literature and LLB from Punjab University, Lahore, Pakistan. Mr. Bashir has also coauthored two books of short stories called “Ghantian” and “Ghunghru”. The two books together may be called The Bells, they tell the stories of various shades of human relationships.
