30 October 2007

Mr. Tariq Ikram, Minister of State and Chief Executive, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan completed a successful two day ( 25-26 October, 2007) visit to the United Kingdom, seeking technical expertise, joint venture partnerships, inward investment and academic collaboration from relevant industry sectors in the United Kingdom, for development of the Dazzle Park in Karachi, Pakistan.

Dazzle Park is a one window special economic zone, adjacent to the Karachi International airport, being established by the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, for export promotion of gems and jewellery. The Dazzle Park will comprise in house facilities for Certification of coloured stones and diamonds by a top of the line international gemstone certification authority. It will also provide Hallmarking of jewellery and Assaying of precious metals by an internationally accepted Hallmarking and Assaying authority. Dazzle Park will have a training facility where successful graduating trainees will receive Diploma’s from an international degree-awarding institute. Appropriate customs, courier and security services will be integrated into the Dazzle Park.

The Goldsmiths’ Company, London Assaying Office has given an encouraging response to Pakistan’s proposal for a joint venture for setting up jewellery Hallmarking and precious metals Assaying facility in Dazzle Park. The Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem –A) is internationally recognized as the oldest and most acclaimed Diploma (Gemmology) awarding institute. Discussions with Gem-A on collaboration for award of Gem-A Diploma’s through the Dazzle Park training facilities were positive. Once the Dazzle Park operation is up and running, within a time line of six to eight months, the UK Trade and Investment (UKT&I) have expressed their willingness to seek interest of the UK gem and jewellery trade and send across a delegation of potential investors to visit the Dazzle Park. UKT&I has also expressed interest in Pakistan’s proposal for establishing an institutional relationship between the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and the UKT&I for enhancing cooperation and developing a calendar of activities to promote trade and investment in both countries.
