General Council meets on 9 May 2007
The D.G-WTO, Pascal Lamy while concluding his statement to the General Council as Chair of the Trade Negotiations Committee said that on the basis of his contacts with Members a successful outcome of the round is possible even in the limited amount of time that remained. He cautioned governments that if they did not come to a compromise soon they would be confronted with the in evitable reality of failure. This would also mean not only losing the significant package on the table but also a breach of the commitments taken by the membership. He said that partly the challenge was technical but mainly it was political. He said members needed to show leadership and to recognize their common interest in success and the collective cost of failure. He urged members to energize the negotiations further.
