Pakistan questions Trade regime of the EC

Pakistan is now effectively using the Trade Policy Review Mechanism at the WTO to make its concerns known to its trading partners. With the assistance of its embassies and commercial offices abroad, Pakistan has been highlighting the difficulties its exporters are facing in various export markets.

In this connection, Pakistan questioned EC’s trade regime during the trade policy review of the European Communities at the WTO on 26 February 2007. Pakistan stated that the European trade policies tended to undermine the multilateral trading system; and that while it helped some developing countries in some kind of trade preferences, it discriminated against products of interest to the remaining developing countries. Referring to the dichotomy in the European trade regime, Pakistan also criticized their tariff peaks and tariff escalations, especially in textile, clothing and leather products.
